Crits in games
Welcome to the long form subject where were going to tackle crits as of right now! Strap in folks.
Mini crits
These in games such as TF2 or in other games being a damage based crits you have players being rewarded/ a bonus damage effect being stacked on top of already existing damage.
Random crits
This from TF2 is a game mechanic that isn't liked and can be manipulated by high damage dealers which I can understand the community not really liking a game mechanic that effectively really only given to the highest damage dealers in the game where players are given this unfair swing of the match where for more casual folks it's, "meh" but for those who climbed from the low skill floor to the higher skill ceiling that this is much more of a punch to the gut.
D20 crit
This kind of crit state having it where players often use the homebrewed rules for crits where the said damage is being rewarded for max possible damage on a two times multiplier with having it where extra damage being rolled being a taking the wind out of the sails as the damage is dealing little to nothing upon the hit.
Percentage change to crit
With this kind of system having it where often it's split from the check itself to see if something lands like in XCom where the given hit is seen if it lands then see if the crit happens and it does feel sweet when that low change lands and you have it where the enemy is vaporized but it is also teeth grinding when such a game encourages you to take it down just enough to grab the said creature and to bring it in for research which makes it so annoying to deal with at the end of the day.
However the crit system is fine and fits to the game.
Critical misses
Missing is already punishing enough but in games where that failure can hit even harder is just... oof. Look; it's not a bad system, especially when you have good rolls or a good string of luck but on days where you're just not going to land it, having a bit more of a forgiving system could help make this less painful.
Crit weakspots
This kind of crit system I love the most; having it in an RPG FPS to FPS in general you're rewarded for hitting the hardest to hit crit spots and getting it down to hit them right in the head! It's less cool and rewarding when the said target area you hit is because your weapon lacks sway, lacks any actual challenge to hit said weak spot.
For crit systems the colors white are used for the common generic damage but the sweet look of the red to pop out and really stand out from the white is great because you can see the results of the hit like in Borderlands really rewarding you at the end of the day.
