Why is positioning in games fun?

So many games and set ups of play having it where fighting games and platformer fighters both rely on positioning but by is positioning so much more important in a platformer fighter and why does this shy away traditional classic fighting game players? To break down the issues into areas/ things to consider how and why into multiple parts.

Positioning advantage

When positioning you have multiple states for a game; negative, neutral and positive. When your opponent is on the back foot against the wall being bad for them so negative, both of you on the center of the stage so neutral.

Then you have negative which is you being pinned against the wall. However; in a platformer fighter and other genres, the positioning isn't as simple as that for a stage/ fight. When pinned against the wall in an FPS game you still have other routes, flanking, etc.

In other genres you have multiple positions you could be in which changes the dynamic of the game; for fighting game players they don't care for this; as thus why you don't see a lot of fighting game players like or enjoy platform fighters because the more focused level of play on positioning where in Mobas positioning is everything versus skillful play but management of everything.

In a fighting game the positioning advantage is kept simple, other genres make positioning more dynamic with what can be good or not.

Area conditions

In the different forms of play you have different conditions the environment can be in. In a fighting game; this would be busted with your opponent having strong control over the field in an insane way. It would ruin combos, make other fighters way to strong, etc.

The ability to control the environment whether indirectly or directly can be a boon to your team or the enemy using that to a greater affect.

Other area conditions are such as your team creating choke points or forcing the enemy to sit behind the wall having to wait for it to break; you're dealing with battles and fights that change entirely how the fight can play out.

What makes positioning not fun?

This can be less fun when overly complex, unable to understand the map layout and or playing the same map over and over to the point that you remember everything like the back of your hand. You have it where people will remember the map layout/ positioning like it's nothing. However; games such as Dead by Daylight have it where positioning of certain items are entirely changed with randomly generated parts of the map.

This goes the same for many killers such as Trapper having to find the tools at their disposal for play. However; most games don't take this approach and for good reason, it takes a lot of time and effort along with the traditional role of DPS, Tank and Support (which is an article in it's own right).

You have it where people can out smart you just on the map info alone rather than skillful play such as remembering flank routes, taking advantage of disadvantage spots in a advantage spot itself.

It can also ruin things such as combos in a fighting game or even a platform fighter help create infinites. You have to consider/ think more about the level itself and even in other genres the map has to be spruced up by map creators to stop predictable easy to read matches.
